Life before New Zealand Encounters? I have been in the Tourist Industry in New Zealand for the last 43 years and have found over the years it to be extremely challenging and rewarding. After leaving school I joined the then Government Tourist and Publicity Department and worked with them for 30 years. During that time I was most fortunate in having marketing and promotional postings for 5 years each in San Francisco and London. During the last 13 years I have worked for New Zealand Central Reservations in Auckland, Travel Time in Hamilton and for the last 3 years New Zealand Encounters in Whitianga.
Favourite New Zealand destination and why? My most favourite destination would have to be the Nelson/Marlborough region. With its great climate it offers visitors a huge welcome. There is a range of activities to enjoy from travelling the wine trails of Blenheim, the great beaches in the Nelson/Motueka district, activities like sea kayaking and hiking in the Abel Tasman National Park and trout fishing in the numerous rivers that form part of the Nelson Lakes District.
Most memorable request from a client? Over the years I think the most unusual and challenging request I have received is to arrange a full wedding ceremony on the Tasman Glacier in the Mt Cook National Park complete with 4 piece string quartet. Being such a remote and unpopulated area it meant bringing all the particpants - marriage celebrant/quartet/witnessses to the region, accommodate them and arrange ski plane transport to and from the glacier. I am pleased to say it was a great success and hopefully the couple are still together today.
